Dev Diary

Research began with the throne room, this was intended to be the focal point of the design of the project. For this I looked into designs from Skyrim, Lord of the Rings, Vikings, Dragon Age, Witcher and Game of Thrones. This is when the Throne room changed from being a throne room and became a building, which blended the shiny and over the top designs of medieval knights and their kingdoms, with the basic, rugged design of Viking huts.

When planning out the project, I decided to focus on getting all of the 3D models completed first as they were what made the game and they tend to be more time consuming than making the technical aspects of the game and can be more prone to bugs and glitches. The map was planned to be made once all the models had been completed, this was because the models made the entirety of the map and the game was heavily based on them. When the map was built, and all the models were in their place I began work on the Blueprints and bug tested them.

During this stage of production, I began making the 3D models for the game after having chosen the general look of the game. The first models that were made were the collectables for the game as they were already decided upon to fit with the “Reclaimed” theme of the overall project. The collectables were chosen to be the characters armor pieces and the sword. A few extra ones were chosen to add more mechanics to the game such as, the crown and the Key. These two were chosen to add more depth to the game and give the player more of a goal.

After the collectables were made, the weapons were focused on. This was because they were very modular and were to be used heavily in the game.

After the weapons I began work on the buildings of the game, these were to be the first thing the player sees when they start the game as the models will be placed in front of the player to make the courtyard. These included spiked barriers, fences and huts.

The castle and its furniture were next to be built as they made up the Castle building, and its interior. After this was completed, I made the statues that would be found inside the castle and to add some extra detail to the game I also tweaked the mannequin around to make a few dead bodies that could be used to litter the map.

The blueprints were the final stage of production for this project as I knew what I needed and how they were going to be used. For these I made an AI, Melee animation and Hitbox Detection, Collectables, Door and a Locked Door. I also used widgets and different levels to make the Main Menu and the Game Over message.
